Drill 2001 - Rescue 911 at the Redwood County Fair - August 18, 2001

The Scenario

For this years drill, the Redwood County Fair board offered to host our drill during the Redwood County Fair.  They felt a "Safe and Sober" theme for the drill might be a good attraction as well as an educational experience for those attending.  We also felt that it would be a great opportunity for educating the public about some of the recent advances in EMS care in our area.  Click here for the press release about the drillClick here for a copy of the scenario.

Special thanks to Jeff Erickson (Lamberton Ambulance), JJ Kottschade (Redwood Falls Fire Department), Bruce Verdos, (Minnesota State Patrol) and John Krohn (Wabasso Ambulance) for narrating the drill for the audience.

With the help of several volunteer accident victims, we were able to help show the audience some of the possible consequences of driving under the influence.

Members of the Redwood Falls Fire Department, Morgan Fire Department, and Belview Fire Department took part in the drill.  Special thanks to the Redwood Falls Fire Department for allowing other departments to use your equipment!

As Fire/Rescue started the task of protecting the scene and opening access to the patients with the jaws, North Ambulance (Redwood Falls) arrives on the scene to find 7 patients.  They immediately call for additional assistance with additional ambulances and North Air-Care.

The State of Minnesota required drills to include a hazardous material.  We opted to use Anhydrous Ammonia, a common farm chemical for use in our drill.  As JJ Kottschade explains to the audience what is happening, Fire Rescue protects patients and EMS personnel by "fogging" the tank with water to help dissipate any possible ammonia leaks.

Morgan and Wabasso Ambulance services arrive shortly after the call for additional help.  This photo shows Morgan's brand new ambulance.

EMS and Fire/Rescue work at removing 2 patients from a overturned pickup.  Wabasso's Ambulance is shown in the background.

North Air-Care arrives on the scene drawing a lot of attention from the audience.

Patients are loaded, and transported.  This patient, one of the most critical, is being cared for by Wabasso Ambulance members and being prepared for transport by North Air-Care.

This photo shows members of several organizations, Redwood Falls Fire, Morgan Fire, North Ambulance, Morgan Ambulance, and the Minnesota State Patrol all working together to safely rescue and treat 7 patients.  This in a nutshell is why the Redwood County EMS Association exists.  The more we train together, the better we work together in times of need!

Special Thanks...

Redwood County Department of Emergency Management.  Without Harold and Michelle's help, drills  and training opportunities such as this would not be possible.
